We have all received the well meaning full advice “Stay positive”. But to stay positive all the time is very hard. The more glass half full perspective is sometimes a bit unrealistic for some people. It is very hard to focus on positive thinking when you think that it is nothing more than wishful thinking.

Positivity is the key to success

What is the obstacle of being positive.
From the day that mankind is on earth we are always searching for threats. This is a humankind survival mechanism that served us when we where hunters and gatherers, living each day what the change of being killed by someone or somebody in your immediate surroundings. Thats why being “negative” or looking for threats is hard written in our brain.

In todays world this survival mechanism is not needed anymore, but we still have it in our subconscious mind. We cannot get rid of this flaw unfortunately but we can adapt to it.

What positivity does with your health.
Pessimism is bad for you, because it harms your health. Various studies has shown that positive people are healthier on the mental and physical side than pessimists.

A study at the University of Pennsylvania has conducted extensive research on the topic. Various researchers from Dartmouth and the University of Michigan did a study that followed people from age 25 to 65 to see how their levels of pessimism or optimism influenced their overall health. They found out that pessimists health deteriorated far more rapidly as they aged.

The university of Pennsylvania didn’t only look for the combination positivity and your health, but also on performance. They measured the degree to which insurance salespeople were optimistic or pessimistic in their work, including how many sales they made in this period of time. Positive / optimistic salespeople sold 37% more than pessimists.

3 tips to increase your positivity:

  1. Separate fact from fiction.
    The first step you can take to improve your positivity is to separate facts from fiction. You need to stop with negative self talks. The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are this thoughts not facts.
  2. Be around positive people.
    People who are positive will be around more positive people, and that will increase their positivity. Search positive people to hang out with and try to work around the people who are pessimists. I know this is very hard todo but it is the best way to be more positive.
  3. Focus on the positivity.
    Once you snap your self out of negative thought, it is time to focus on the positivity and identifying positivity. This will be eventually come naturally to you, but first it will be hard. You need to wonder around in your brain a bit searching and consciously selecting something positive to think about.

Do it all together at the same time.
I know that these tips are a bit basic and easy to come up it. But if you use it, you will see that these tips have tremendous power together. It will train your brain to think more positive, they break old habits and replace them with positive habits.
